WELCOME TO SCOUTS!

Our Scout Troop meets normally every Thursday Evening at the Scout Headquarters from 6:30 to 8:30pm unless otherwise stated on the programme.

The third section in the Scouting family is Scouts. These are boys and girls aged 10½ to 14 and have often moved up from Cubs. Scouts are found all over the world and we have a fair few in the Bristol South District! As well as adventure, our Scouts learn leadership skills, teamwork, to try new things and build on their existing skills.

Scouts started in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour and the movement has grown to world wide proportions.

Adventurous Activities

Scouts at the 82ND enjoy many activities including hikes, cooking competitions, camping skills competitions as well as pioneering and fire lighting. Whilst at Scouts your child can work towards over 70 different badges covering nearly every hobby; from painting, to circus skills, to DIY, to martial arts, to photography, there's even one for enjoying watching sport! Scouts also have a series of challenge badges and if they complete eight of these they are awarded the Chief Scout's Gold award, the highest award they can achieve in the Scout section.

Working Together

Our Scout Troops cover a selection of schools, so your child will make new friends. Scouts work in Patrols to encourage team work and helping each other. One of the Scouts in a Patrol is the Patrol Leader, who looks after new Scouts, makes sure that everyone gets their say and passes on skills. Scouts make their own decisions and are often involved in planning their own programme of activities.

Nights Away

Scouts enjoy many residential experiences, whether its staying in purpose built bunkhouses, on local Scout Campsites, at Scout Activity Centres or just in a field, wherever they end up its always fun! While your Scout is away you can be sure that their leaders have the right experience and training to handle the adventure.

SCOUT OF THE MONTH IS

SCOUT CAMP NEWS :  SURVIVAL CAMP 2016!

Where did all that mud come from? The weekend saw the Scouts yet again battling the elements in the name of Scouting. Despite the cold and the rain the Scouts all got stuck in taking part in a variety of activities over the weekend. Everything from using axes, fire lighting, team challenges, first aid, pioneering and backwoods cooking. These activities not only taught the Scouts valuable scouts skills and the importance of team work but also allowed them to work towards their outdoor challenge badge.

The Scouts set up camp on the Friday, which thankfully was dry and gave us chance to road test our new tents (which are awesome - and so easy to put up!) This gave the Scouts insight in to just how much work (and kit) goes in to a camping trip, but they all worked tirelessly throughout the weekend, despite the weather to make it such a success. Alongside being responsible for their tents and setting up camp, Scouts had to cook, prepare and clear away every meal and help with the general maintenance of the camp - lighting fires, chopping firewood, collecting water etc.

One of the highlights of the weekend was raising £690 bag packing on Saturday alongside the Beavers and a Cubs... I'm sure the Scouts using some poetic licensing to tell customers about their "terrible and freezing" night in a tent helped us get a few extra pennies! Another highlight was the Scouts toasting bread on an open fire for breakfast - a simple activity that went down a storm and even saw Steve fighting the Scouts for a toasting stick to have a go!Despite the cold, affecting the amount of sleep adults and Scouts had each night, everyone worked hard and got stuck in. Especially during the tidy up on Sunday where everything resembled the same brown colour and took a while to wash and dry out!

A massive thank you to all of the Scouts, for always making the hard work that goes in to the activities worth it... Especially to see our more reserved and quiet children come "out of their shell" and try things they never thought they would... And to see all the Scouts despite gender or age all do this together as one big family.. Is a proud moment for all of our leaders! Another thank you to the Leaders and helpers that made it possible! At the end of the day camp was called survival camp.. And everyone survived so mission accomplished!

If you would like to find out more about scouts; please do not hesitate to contact the Scout Leader.
